Most of the coaching I offer resonates with professionals in mid- to senior-level positions who are either now coming into leadership roles where more is expected of them or they are at a point where they are interested in defining more clearly who they want to be. In both cases, they clients want to posture themselves in a manner that their role demands, while staying true to themselves.
A recurring theme among clients is that they have been successful in their role as a team contributor, and it is assumed that they have the necessary skills to lead a team. When faced with these new expectations, we determine what they view as “success” in an effective leader by answering questions like:
Their description of an effective leader reveals what they value. Operating daily on those strengths fulfills their values and avoids burnout. It’s also a challenge for many clients to strike a balance of being authoritative but approachable, raising up everyone together while being an individual powerhouse. They need to chart a future for themselves and be supported in doing that.
From a third-party, outside view, executive coaching helps clients in a non-judgmental protected space. Some request coaching to chart a path when they feel as though they are floundering in their professional or personal life. When the two intersect, I help them gain clarity of how they visualize success, and we find ways to get them there. Others thrive on challenges but might need to reframe the narrative so they can refocus on what they can control, and not lose sight of the bigger picture. Helping clients to find new jobs or find greater satisfaction in their current roles are two other areas of the executive coaching I offer.
Another coaching area that has become increasingly relevant and requested among clients, is dealing with the ‘empty nest.’ Clients realize how much time they now have to pursue other interests, but occasionally feel daunted by taking on new challenges and interests when they feel preoccupied by the void left by their children.
These conversations and subsequent self-discovery supports the client in achieving their goals. I love to have clients succeed and be visible in their success.
Small to mid-size companies make up the majority of my company client base. I also work with non-profit organizations. I am not restricted to any geographic area and will leverage video conferencing technology to accommodate meeting with clients virtually, as well as consult via telephone or in person. While my executive coaching is customized, I recommend a minimum of five sessions. Though at eight to ten sessions, clients hit their stride.
